Understanding Long-Term Validation (LTV) in Digital Signatures

Introduction 

In modern enterprises, e-signatures are no longer just about signing documents—they are about ensuring long-term trust, compliance, and legal validity. This is especially important in industries like banking, legal, healthcare, and government, where documents often need to remain valid for decades. 

The Problem: Why Signatures Become Harder to Validate Over Time 

The challenge is that traditional digital signatures rely on external systems such as Certificate Authorities and validation servers. Over time, these systems may expire or become unavailable, making it difficult to verify older documents even if they were originally valid. 

What Long-Term Validation (LTV) Solves 

PAdES defines profiles and mechanisms that support long-term signature validation through embedded validation information and trusted timestamps.

Long-Term Validation helps signed PDFs remain verifiable over time by retaining key validation evidence within the document. This may include: 

  • Certificate chain linking signer to trusted authority 
  • Revocation data (OCSP/CRL status) 
  • Trusted timestamps from a Time Stamping Authority (TSA)

As a result, future verification becomes less dependent on live external validation services, even after signing certificates have expired. 

What Validation Evidence Is Preserved 

Certificates expire, but signed documents shouldn’t become invalid due to the passage of time. LTV provides a solution for that. When LTV is enabled, the signature immediately incorporates evidence that the signer’s certificate was valid (not revoked) at the time of signing. Validation software can thereby verify that the signature was authentic at the moment of signing, even if the certificate has since expired, whether it is checked the next week or ten years later.

This is significant because, in the absence of LTV, confirming an outdated signature requires depending on outside certificate authority, which may eventually become unreliable, sluggish, or nonexistent. By eliminating such reliance, LTV secures the proof in advance.

Why Enterprises Need It 

Enterprises handle documents that must remain valid for 10–50 years, including contracts, financial records, compliance reports, and HR documentation. 

Without LTV, they risk:

  • Loss of signature verifiability over time 
  • Dependence on external systems during audits 
  • Legal and compliance issues 
  • Weak evidence in disputes 

With LTV, documents become self-verifiable and audit-ready, independent of external infrastructure. 

How It Works in Practice 

LTV can be supported as part of the signing lifecycle:

  • The document is digitally signed
  • Validation evidence is captured, such as certificates, revocation information, and trusted timestamps
  • The signed PDF can retain the information needed for future verification
  • The signature can be validated later, even when certificates have expired or external validation services are unavailable
